This report includes analyses on:
1️⃣ Libya | Flooding, severe weather after Storm Daniel
2️⃣ Morocco | Death toll rises after devastating earthquake
3️⃣ North America | Hurricane Lee makes landfall
1. Libya | Storm Daniel hits coastal towns (September 010, 23)
Storm Daniel made landfall in Libya on Sunday, 10 September 2023, causing severe weather conditions in the country’s northeast regions. Flooding has been reported in numerous cities, including Benghazi and Bayda. However, it appears the city of Derna is most affected after two burst dams significantly increased the intensity of the floods. Entire neighbourhoods have been swept away as a result, causing severe damage to critical infrastructure, healthcare facilities, and communication lines. According to an article by Al Jazeera, published on 15 September, the death toll in Derna is reported to be at 11,300, with a further 10,100 people missing.
2. Morocco | Death toll rises after devastating earthquake (September 15, 23)
The death toll in Morocco has risen following a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake with reportedly nearly 3,000 people dead and over 5,000 injured. 50,000 buildings are now reported to have been damaged. Without additional assistance from capable international actors, the human and health security crisis caused by this disaster is likely to continue. The remote and mountainous regions that were worst affected by the quake are already under-resourced. Local untrained teams are less likely to be as effective as trained search- and-rescue crews for locating and recovering survivors and bodies.
3. North America | Hurricane Lee makes landfall (September 17, 23)
Hurricane Lee made landfall on the north-east coast of North America late on Saturday 16 Sep 23. The storm was downgraded to a post-tropical storm as it hit parts of Massachusetts and Maine in the USA, however still brought with it heavy rains and winds which have caused at least one death and reportedly cut power to tens of thousands of people across the Northeast USA and Canada. Winds were recorded at 130km/h and waves were recorded in parts of coastal Maine as high as 4.5 metres.
