1️⃣ Libya | Humanitarian concerns as Storm Daniel disaster response continues

2️⃣ North America | Hurricane Lee makes landfall on the east coast

3️⃣ Morocco | Update on response to devastating earthquake

1. Libya | Humanitarian concerns as Storm Daniel response continues (September 22)

The aftermath of the floods in Libya continue to pose challenges for humanitarian and disaster assistance. As the focus of aid moves from the response phase to recovery there remains a lack of reliable and accurate data surrounding the impact of the floods, especially after telecommunication and internet lines were cut during the week. Tens of thousands of people remain displaced and without safe and secure food, water, shelter, and healthcare.

2. North America | Tropical Storm Ophelia make landfall on the east coast (September 22)

Ophelia’s centre made landfall with sustained winds recorded at 110 km/h. Parts of North Carolina and Virginia experienced up to 6 inches of rainfall while the rest of the mid- Atlantic region witnessed up to 2-4 inches. Approximately 70,000 homes and businesses also experienced power outages across North Carolina and Virginia. Five people were rescued by the Coast Guard in North Carolina and while there were reports of downed trees, there were no reported casualties or major road closures from the impacted areas.

3. Morocco | Update on response to devastating earthquake (September 23)

The aftermath of the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Morocco two weeks ago has presented significant challenges to the ongoing aid response. The government has pledged 120 billion dirhams for reconstruction over the next five years. The program promises short term aid such as medical and food provisions as well as a long-term recovery plan including the rebuilding of infrastructure. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has stated that immediate security issues such as food and water have largely been met by the local community response to the disaster. Many families, however, are still being housed in makeshift settlements and electricity is still yet to be restored to some areas. IFRC has expressed concern that heavy rain forecasted in the coming weeks may trigger landslides.
