1. Australia | Flooding monitoring in Queensland (February 9th)
This report provides an overview of three prominent flooding hazards across Queensland. It examines the disaster resilience and coping capacity of affected areas to determine their exposure and potential vulnerability to current and future flooding hazards.
The Maranoa, Richmond, and Burke LGAs are likely to face a challenging response and recovery process due to the strain from multiple consecutive disasters. Flood exposure is expected to remain a constant challenge in these regions.
2. Papua New Guinea | Civil unrest and gender based violence (February 10th)
This report provides an overview of the developments and challenges regarding civil unrest in Papua New Guinea, throughout January and early February 2024.
The riots of January 10, 2024, highlight the challenges faced by Papua New Guinea in addressing public grievances and underscore the importance of fostering stronger collaboration and trust between the government and security services.(1) The riots are likely to exacerbate the concerns of foreign investors about the impact of civil unrest on economic security.

3. Ethiopia | Food insecurity concerns in country’s north (February 10th)
This report provides an overview of the food insecurity challenges faced in Northern Ethiopia due to drought, political tensions, refugee flows and the aftermath of conflict. It highlights the severe hunger and ongoing need for acute aid and medical supplies in Northern Ethiopia to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.
Aid agencies are likely to require a significant increase in funding and resources to ensure adequate food and aid can be delivered to rising numbers of vulnerable people whilst navigating political complexities.
