1. The Philippines | Typhoon Doksuri (26th July 23)
Typhoon Doksuri struck on the 26th of July, causing devastating floods and landslides. Initial reports stated that at least five people had lost their lives, with one victim in the central region of Calabarzon and four in the Cordillera region. Extreme weather events continue to become more prevalent in the Philippines, particularly typhoons.
2. Greece | Heatwave and fires (26th July 23)
Europe has recently been experiencing hot and dry weather conditions which have led to large wildfires in Greece and reportedly three fatalities. Emergency flights have evacuated thousands of tourists as fires burn on the islands of Rhodes, Corfu and Evia. Hot temperatures on the 26th of July recorded 44°C (111°F) and are likely to continue to reach similar highs.
3. Algeria | Wildfires displace thousands (27th July 23)
At least 34 people, including 10 soldiers, have died as a result of wildfires tearing through the Béjaïa and Bouïra regions of Algeria. 97 outbreaks of fire have been reported across the country, affecting farmland and forests.
Over 1,500 people have been evacuated from their homes as over 8,000 firefighters work to control the fires. The Algerian ministry has ordered that “Civil protection services remain mobilized until the fires are completely extinguished”.
