HADR Institute Quarterly Impacts

What Is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday, celebrated this year on 03 December 2024, is a global day of generosity. It’s a chance for people worldwide to come together to support meaningful causes and make a difference. For the HADR Institute, it’s an opportunity to highlight the transformative work we’ve accomplished this past quarter—and to invite you to join us in building an even greater impact for 2025.

As a new and small charity, we don’t receive major funding from governments, philanthropic organizations, or large-scale donors. Instead, we rely on a community of generous supporters and partners who make our mission possible. Your generosity today will directly shape the lives of thousands of vulnerable people across Asia and the Pacific.

What do we do? We enable community and local level humanitarian groups enhance their impacts - providing them with aid, resources, information and support to prepare and respond in the most challenging circumstances. Localised humanitarian action.

Quarterly Impact: Thousands Helped Across Regions

Despite limited resources, the HADR Institute has achieved incredible outcomes this quarter:

Myanmar: Delivering Life-Saving Water

Our Operation Myanmar Humanitarian Support has brought clean water to displaced communities affected by conflict and floods. We have done one WASH Filter push in October and another will be complete within the next fortnight. Given funding and support, another push will occur with our partners in January of 2025 and we hope further missions beyond - as the need is great.

  • This effort over October and December provides up to 10,000 people daily with clean drinking water, or 3,000 individuals with water for both drinking and hygiene needs.

  • These solutions will last for up to 10 years, offering long-term stability to vulnerable populations. This is a massive impact for a relatively low cost, that you can be a part of.

This was made possible through partnerships with Safe Water for Every Child Myanmar and Disaster Aid Thailand. In January, we’ll expand this impact with another delivery to reach even more vulnerable and underserved communities. Due to conflict and severe restrictions, these are affected people that only community and local level programs can support - government and international NGO and UN programs are generally unable to operate in Karen/Kayin State due to restrictions imposed by the SAC Military Junta.

Improving Humanitarian Access in Karen State

We conducted a fact-finding mission along the Thai/Myanmar border, resulting in an interim report that identifies:

  • Unexploded ordnance (UXO) risks.

  • Physical and environmental barriers.

  • Restricted access to essential services for conflict-affected populations.

A more comprehensive report is underway, providing crucial insights for humanitarian practitioners. Our aim is to keep humanitarian practitioners safe and to enhance effectiveness of community level humanitarian programs in the most challenging environments.

Looking Ahead to Chin State in 2025

We are preparing a program for Chin State, launching in 2025, in collaboration with a key NGO partner, Chin Human Rights Organisation (CHRO). This initiative will combine humanitarian aid and human rights protection, addressing critical needs in one of Myanmar’s most underserved regions.

Expanding Impact in the Pacific

Collaborating Across Island Nations

At the FALE Pacifika AGM, we laid the groundwork for supporting communities in Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands. These programs focus on:

  • Strengthening collaboration and mutual aid.

  • Enhancing anticipatory action and localisation.

  • Empowering local communities with tailored information management systems.

Strengthening Programs in Papua New Guinea

We are advancing efforts in Papua New Guinea, working to build resilience and capacity for communities facing crises and preparing for future challenges.

During this past quarter, we developed our Enga Disaster Resilience Initiative (EDRI) Landslip Risk Analysis Dashboard, which can be seen here. This dashboard, and the risk data sheets, provide the potential to prevent and mitigate disaster risk - it is about saving lives.

Currently, we are seeking ways to be able to capacity strengthen and support provincial and community organisations in an effort to enhance preparedness.

Why Your Support on Giving Tuesday Matters

On this Giving Tuesday, 03 December 2024, your generosity is more vital than ever. Over the last quarter, we’ve:

  • Delivered clean water to tens of thousands of people in Myanmar, providing long-term solutions for displaced communities.

  • Laid the groundwork for 2025 programs that will support vulnerable populations across Myanmar and the Pacific.

  • Strengthened resilience through collaborative efforts and innovative solutions tailored to the needs of local communities.

But there’s so much more to do. Your donation today will allow us to:

  • Expand life-saving clean water programs to reach more vulnerable populations.

  • Implement humanitarian strategies in conflict-affected and underserved areas.

  • Fully realize the potential of our programs in Myanmar and the Pacific in 2025.
