HADR Institute Global Disaster Snapshot - edition 014

Welcome to this new edition of the HADRI GDS (014). We cover events in Mali, Palestine, and Ukraine, with reports crafted between the 30 June-9 July 2023.

1️⃣ Mali | United Nations votes to withdraw its peacekeeping mission on creating a precarious situation. (30th June)

2️⃣ Palestine | Infrastructure damage reported in Jenin reported on 4th July, impacting human security for the public.

3️⃣ Ukraine | Significant civilian impact reported on 6th July after an apartment building strike.

1. UN Security Council ends peacekeeping mission in Mali (30 June 23)

The UN Security Council has unanimously voted to withdraw its peacekeeping forces from Mali following demands for their immediate departure. The UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was established in 2013 following a coup and has been supporting the presence of over 15,000 peacekeeping personnel in the country.

Security responsibilities will be handed to the country's transitional government which was established in 2021.

2. Military operation in Jenin damages critical infrastructure, obstructing humanitarian aid relief (04 July 23)

Critical infrastructure damaged in Israeli military operations in Jenin Refugee Camp have restricted access to humanitarian assistance. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports that twelve Palestinians were killed in the operation, of which four were children. Notably, 143 people are injured while twenty are in critical condition.

Although some 3,500 people have been displaced due to damage inflicted upon living areas and neighbourhoods, many have been able to return with the exception of 20 families.

3. Six killed in apartment building strike in Lviv, Ukraine (06 July 23)

A missile struck an apartment block in the Ukraine city of Lviv, killing 6 and leaving multiple casualties. The attack took place in the early hours of Thursday morning and has been described, by the city’s mayor, as one the largest attacks on the city’s civilian infrastructure in the conflict so far.

Rescue services have continued to bring survivors out of the rubble, with reports of around 60 people being pulled from the destroyed apartments.
