This report includes analyzes on:

1️⃣ India | Heavy rains and flooding reported on 10th July.

2️⃣ Canada | Continued wildfires reported on 12th July, leading to extensive damage.

3️⃣ Sudan | Report of mass displacement due to escalating violent conflict on 13th July.

4️⃣ Tunisia | Inadequate conditions for expelled refugees reported on 14th July.

5️⃣ China | Unstable weather warning issued on 14th July, triggering disaster preparedness measures.

1. India | Heavy rains and flooding (10 July 23)

Torrential rains and flooding have resulted in 25 reported deaths in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. 153 millimetres of rainfall was recorded by the Indian Meteorological Department, stating the 153mm was the wettest July since 1982.

2. Canada | Wildfires continue to burn (12 July 23)

Wildfires are continuing to burn throughout Canada since the beginning of the summer fire season. As of the 7th of July, federal data showed that over 9 million hectares have been burnt this season. With 3 months left in the official system, the records show the area burnt already has surpassed a 34-year record.

3. Sudan | Mass displacement amid violent conflict (13 July 23)

Millions displaced, reports of genocide and sanctions imposed by the UK.

Conflict in Sudan has been ongoing since 15th April 2023. Over 3,000 people are reported to have died and over 6,000 have been injured since the conflict began, however local doctors and activists estimate that this number is much higher. Sanctions have already been imposed on companies linked to the army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) by the US in June. This week, the UK has imposed sanctions on six commercial entities which it claims are linked to the two warring Sudanese military groups.

It is very likely that the security situation will continue to remain volatile in Sudan. It is probable that the conflict in Sudan will deteriorate into a civil war which would possibly add further complexity to the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.

An increase in terrorist activity in Sudan and along the borders of neighbouring countries, such as Egypt, is also possible.

4. Tunisia | Poor conditions for expelled refugees (14 July 23)

After the expulsion of 1200 Black Africans from Tunisia since the 3rd of July, some 70 refugees are still displaced throughout the desolated Tunisia-Libya border zone amid soaring desert temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius.

Collective animosity towards Black refugees within Tunisia has enabled authorities to take discriminatory actions on the basis of race against asylum seekers.

5. China | Unstable weather warning (14 July 2023)

Heavy rains across Central and Southwestern China are coupled with increased heat waves in Northern China, including the nation's capital of Beijing.

China should expect floods, severe convection weather, typhoons, and high temperatures all throughout July. Xi Jinping has been quoted saying that "authorities at all levels must give top priority to ensuring people's safety and property".

Floods and geological disasters have been triggered from heavy rains along the Yangtze, with mudslides and flash floods expected in some mountainous areas.
